Lincoln Speech Sets Auction Record

Today's Christie's sale of Abraham Lincoln's 1864 victory speech set what various media outlets are calling a new record for the highest price paid for an American historical document (by which they apparently mean manuscript document). The speech sold for just over $3.44 million to an anonymous telephone bidder.

Christie's revealed that the speech was sold by the Southworth Library Association in Dryden, NY, which plans to use the proceeds to build a new wing.

More on the other Christie's results tomorrow morning.
